The Irish Malone Family is an ancient sept, known in Gaelic as O Maoil Eoin, meaning descendant of a servant or devotee of Saint John, maol being Irish for bald and referring to the distinctive hairstyle sported by the Irish monks. The sept has certainly lived up to it's name, in maintaining close associations with the ecclesiastical orders, producing many Bishops and Abbots, in particular, it's connection with the Abbey of Clonmacnois. The surname is rarely seen today with it's prefix O'.
